Heath Ledger

This page was originally posted in 2008 on my first website. When I switched Internet providers in 2010 I archived the content of the site, and reposted it on Dec 2013 on my other blog, Mikey's Blog of Awesomeness. As I have always had a crush on Heath Ledger I wanted to post this page on Mikey's Fabulous Gay Blog too! So now here once again is my tribute page to one of my favourite actors, Heath Ledger!!!!

The news of Heath Ledger's death on Jan 22, 2008 was very unexpected, shocking, and sad. His film A Knight's Tale is one of my favourite movies. Even before he appeared in A Knight's Tale Heath Ledger was one of my favourite actors and I have enjoyed watching many of his films. He was certainly a very talented actor. I've had a crush on him for quite a while, and have always found him to be very attractive... both handsome and cute at the same time. From interviews and behind the scenes footage that I've seen, he seemed to be very down to earth without the inflated ego that most Hollywood celebrities have. I find it quite sad that he has passed away at such a young age. He was only 28 years old, and about two and a half months away from his 29th birthday.

So here is my tribute page to Heath Ledger with some of my thoughts about his movies.  I have not seen every one of his films, as there were many, but it has always been a goal of mine to do so.  The pictures that are included below were found on the internet, and I've also included some notable web links below.

Roar, 1997-2000 (TV series)
When the premier of Roar first aired on TV, I recorded it on a VHS tape which I still have.  It was a great show, and a great start to a remarkable career. In addition to Heath Ledger in the starring role, the show also had very cool costumes.

10 Things I Hate About You, 1999

The Patriot, 2000

Monster's Ball, 2001

A Knight's Tale, 2001
I have watched A Knight's Tail at least a dozen times. This is a great film with an excellent cast and a fun story set in the Dark Ages... and more cool costumes! The jousting scenes are awesome, though one of my favourite scenes is when they dance to David Bowie's Golden Years. Heath Ledger is adorable in this movie. I became a fan of his because of this film.

The Four Feathers, 2002
This is an awesome movie!

The Order, 2003

Ned Kelly, 2003

Casanova, 2005
This is somewhat of a comical movie with a great cast, and it's a lot of fun to watch. Heath Ledger is very dashing as the leading man. This is the type of movie you want to watch more than once.

The Brothers Grimm, 2005

Lords of Dogtown, 2005
Heath Ledger was awesome in this movie.

Brokeback Mountain, 2005
When Heath Ledger did the movie Brokeback Mountain in 2005 my respect for him doubled several times over, not just for his talent as an actor but as a person. It took a lot of bravery to make this film for many reasons. Just before the film was released, I recall reading about what happened when he and his co-stars had appeared before the press for the big media launch. When the event began and journalists started asking the actors questions it was quickly evident that the press found the topic of a western-themed gay love story to be laughable, and did not take the film seriously. Heath Ledger spoke up and pointedly stated that he had a great deal of respect for the subject of the film, and didn't think there was anything funny about the two main characters being gay. That put an end to the foolish questions, and the event continued with the seriousness and respect that the topic deserved. Since then, whenever I saw a trailer for one of his films, or his picture somewhere, I always thought about this story. It took a lot of character to do what he did. Brokeback Mountain of course, was a big success and received a great deal of acclaim.

Candy, 2006

I'm Not There, 2007

The Dark Knight (Batman), 2008

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, 2008

Heath Ledger...as himself

Heath Ledger
April 4, 1979 - Jan 22, 2008

Update: April 28, 2017
I just found out about the new documentary titled I am Heath Ledger which makes use of film footage that Heath himself created. I'm sooooooo happy to learn about this today! The film will be playing May 4 to 11 at Cineplex theatres here in Ottawa. I'm not certain if these are the local screening dates or across Canada. This is the Cineplex page about the screenings: https://www.cineplex.com/Movie/i-am-heath-ledger-2017on

Here is the official website for more info about where the film will be screening as well as a link to view the trailer: https://www.iamheathledger.com/

This will certainly be a remarkable documentary that is not to be missed! I can't wait to see it!!!

Update May 7, 2017
I saw the documentary tonight and was very impressed with all the amazing footage and how it was all edited together. This is a very well made film that celebrates Heath Ledger's life and career. Due to Heath's unexpected passing at such a young age there is an unavoidable tone of sadness to the documentary which I found was handled very well. It was not sensationalistic or filled with hubris. This was a genuine heartfelt discussion of who Heath Ledger was and what he meant to many of the key people in his life, in their own words. Among those interviewed are his parents and siblings, childhood friends, and fellow actors from several of his films along with Director Ang Lee. It's a wonderful tribute to a very talented actor and artist which, frankly, makes me miss Heath Ledger even more, so if you see this film prepare to be depressed afterwards! (sigh!) Imagine what wonderful films he would have made! None the less, I'm quite thankful for this film and the opportunity to get to know Heath Ledger on a more personal level. It's certainly very generous of his family to do a film like this, allowing his fans this rare and candid look into Mr. Ledger's life. He really seems to have been quite a remarkable person.
